About Title I
Originally passed as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty in 1965, Title I is the cornerstone of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act – now commonly referred to as No Child Left Behind. It is the largest federally funded pre-college education program in the country and provides funding to school districts across the country to improve the education of economically disadvantaged students. A clear explanation of how funding is distributed can be found in the New America Foundation’s Federal Education Budget Project blog.
